NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Upward Stars Nashville had 19 teams competing in the Middle Tennessee area this past weekend (April 6-8), participating in both the Hoops Classic (9 Upward Stars Teams) and the MSYS 3rd Annual Mid State Shootout (10 Upward Stars Teams).
The Hoops Classic was headlined by the 4th Grade Select-North squad (boys). Head Coach Glen Clem and his squad went 5-0 in their division and brought home the championship trophy, defeating NYBA 2027 Elite, 32-20 for the title!
Two more Upward Stars teams made it to the Championship Game in their respective divisions. Coach Reece Chamberlain and the 7th Grade Premier-North boys went 5-1 on the weekend in a 17-team field, dropping a closely contested championship game in overtime. The 9th Grade Select-South team (boys), coached by Brian Moragne and Trey Chappelle, also advanced to the championship game in which they took their only loss of the weekend (4-1).
The 7th Grade Premier-South boys (Coach Darrin Joines) and girls (Coach Catrice James) teams both made some noise in the Hoops Classic. Each squad advanced to the semifinals in their divisions.
The club also saw success at the MSYS 3rd Annual Mid State Shootout with 10 teams competing on the weekend.
Coach Kaila Carter led her 4th Grade Select-South girl’s squad to a perfect 4-0 on the weekend, bringing home yet another championship for Upward Stars. In other girl’s teams results, Coach Austin Bell and the 6th Select-North team took 2nd place. Coach Abigail Warren and the 9th/10th Grade Select-South Team went 2-2 on the weekend with a semi-final appearance.
On the boy’s side, the 4th Grade Select-South boys (Coach Andrew James) and 8th Grade Select-South boy’s (Coach JP Nyadaro) teams were also successful this weekend, making it to the semi-final games of their divisions.
Upward Stars will have 29 teams in action this weekend (April 13-15) in both regional and local tournaments. Three boy’s teams (8th Premier-South/Vanlier; 8th Premier-North/Mims; and 10th Premier-North/Gerlach) will be traveling to Terre Haute, IN, for The Gatorade Association Circuit. Five girl’s teams will be competing in a large, AAU Qualifier Event in Manchester, TN.
