NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Upward Stars Nashville sent five of their teams on the road last weekend (April 6-8) to compete in a couple of regional, exposure events. All five teams experienced some success on the court, with Upward Stars teams going 11-10 on the weekend.
Three boy’s teams traveled up to Knoxville for the highly competitive KnoxVegas Heat Invitational:
· 8th Premier-North (Coach Malik Mims & Malcolm Montgomery)
· 9th Premier Nashville (Coach Andres Montana)
· 10th Grade South (Coach Sam Moran)
This annual event in Knoxville always attracts top clubs from across the region (OH, KY, TN, SC, NC, & GA) and this year was no different! While the 8th Premier-North and 10th South teams both went 1-2, it was the 9th Premier Nashville squad that turned some heads in Knoxville (9th Grade / 24 team division)! Coach Montana’s team, which features some of Middle Tennessee’s finest in the Class of 2021, went 3-2, losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion (KBA Free Agents / TN; finished 6-0), 74-69. Only two teams played the KBA Free Agents within 19 points, with Upward Stars Nashville being one of those teams dropping that quarterfinal game by five points.
Two boy’s teams traveled to Louisville, KY, for the Louisville Legends Under Armour Spring Invitational: Coach Bobby Moore and his 8th Premier-North team; Coach Todd Gerlach and his 10th Premier-North team.
Coach Bobby Moore and his 8th Premier-North Team had a tremendous showing, going 4-2 and taking 2nd place in the 13 team event. After dropping their first game of the tournament 41-37, the team woke up and played well on their march to the championship game! Coach Moore’s team picked up wins over Team Loyalty, OCA, EAB, and Clashers, before losing the title game tilt to D-1 (champions finished 5-0 for the weekend). Team members include: Samuel Bailey, Stephen Carter, Logan Johnson, Jackson Long, Cade Martin, Tyler Moore, Kristian Shaw, Joshua Williams, and Chandler Woosley.
The 10th Premier-North team competed well in Louisville, going 2-2 and advancing to the quarterfinals, dropping that game 56-51 to GPP Red. GPP Red won their next two games by 21 and 9, in route to their championship title.
Upward Stars will have 29 teams in action this weekend (April 13-15) in both regional and local tournaments. Three boy’s teams (8th Premier-South/Vanlier; 8th Premier-North/Mims; and 10th Premier-North/Gerlach) will be traveling to Terre Haute, IN, for The Gatorade Association Circuit. Five girl’s teams will be competing in a large, AAU Qualifier Event in Manchester, TN.
