Sports creates the context for us to push ourselves, and in doing so we experience our gifts and limitations. Competition has a way of revealing who we are and giving us the opportunity to grow our character. After I finished playing college basketball in 2012, I always knew eventually I would be coming back to the game somehow because I still had so much to offer. The love and passion I have when playing and watching never seemed to fade away over the years. When I referee a kids basketball game, I always seem to catch myself guiding or teaching a kid how to do something better on the court without being asked. My father, who was also my first coach, taught me the love for the game. His favorite quote to me was, " Whatever you put in, you will get out." I wish to teach this message to the kids, as well as the importance of putting the love of God into the sport, because without Him it wouldn't be possible.

    Why I love to coach:
Growing up playing multiple sports, I was blessed with many great coaches. Many of my teams had successes, but I remember the impact of those coaches on my personal development much more than any game outcome or individual accomplishment. Young people deserve to be molded spiritually, emotionally, and physically and they need to be encouraged while pursuing those desirable qualities and characteristics that will carry them far in life. Long after games are over, the positive impact of a mentor/coach should last. I take the opportunity to coach as a very serious responsibility and enjoy the journey of helping take a player from where they are to where I know they can be.

    Why I love to coach:
I believe that as a coach and as a teacher, our first responsibility is to be an example. I believe our example isn’t the most important thing, but the only thing. In coaching, I see my job as a mentor and role model more important than the "X’s and O’s." A successful coach and teacher is able to impact the lives of the players/students long after they leave the court. Of course it is a priority to be successful in competition; I feel that the winning happens as a result of proper planning and preparation. If we are molding youth with the right values and work ethic, then they will want to prepare the way necessary to be successful. I like to build relationships with my student athletes. I feel it is a coach’s responsibility to take an interest in other activities that your student athletes participate in. My wife and I love to support plays, band, and other sports. I think building that atmosphere, where we all support each other, makes the decision to go the extra mile for your team that much more attractive. I have players who have come through my programs that are now playing college basketball. It is awesome to still be able to have a relationship with them. I am able to lend advice and just be an ear for them to talk to.
